About Us

Navdeep Nijhawan MD, FRCSC, DABO

Dr. Nijhawan graduated medical school and residency in Ophthalmology from the University of Toronto. Following his residency, he received the prestigious American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS) Fellowship at the University of Toronto which he completed in 2003. He has trained under world-renowned surgeons including Dr. James Oestreicher and Dr. John Harvey. Dr. Nijhawan is dual certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and the American Board of Ophthalmology.

Currently, he is the Chief preceptor of the Oculoplastics fellowship at the University of Toronto which is the only ASOPRS recognized fellowship outside of the United States. Dr. Nijhawan is also the Fellowship Director for the Department of Vision Sciences at the University of Toronto and is an associate professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Toronto and a clinical assistant professor of Ophthalmology at McMaster University. He has practice locations at Lakeridge Health, St. Michael’s Hospital and Mount Sinai Hospital.

Dr. Nijhawan is a noted speaker and educator on topics related to ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery and is actively involved in teaching medical students, residents and fellows at the University of Toronto. In 2012, he was awarded the University of Toronto’s Department of Ophthalmology Golden Suture Award for resident surgical teaching.

He has been a leader in research endeavors and in 2011 was awarded the distinguished ASOPRS Research Award for a paper on Lymphatic Drainage Patterns of the Human Eyelid. He has authored numerous scientific papers and has presented internationally.

When not busy taking care of his patients, training future physicians, or performing research, Dr. Nijhawan is an avid promoter of more effective and efficient eye care within the province. He is an executive member of the Canadian Society of Oculoplastic Surgeons, a member of the Physician Payment Review Board, past chair of the Eye Physician and Surgeons of Ontario, and is a past member of the Eye Health Council of Ontario.
